Job Description:
We are looking for a new staff member who can join the team in the field and assist with the management of volunteers on a biodiversity and community expedition in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In particular we are looking to hire a staff member certified in bird banding/ringing with extensive mist netting and banding experience. The main responsibility of this position is to provide assistance in ongoing research and continuous volunteer management and training, with a sound basis in GVI's Health and Safety regulations and project protocols. Staff are also required to assist with the planning and execution of the biological projects supporting the local partners and community projects (in this case, leading the avian project under direction of Base Manager, as well as learning/leading other surveys involving other taxa), teaching English language and conservation, and developing good relations with all surrounding local communities, along with efficiently running the operations of the expedition – from weekly food shopping, to finances, logistical help, to scheduling surveys each week for staff and volunteers. Good organizational and time management skills are essential. Current biological projects include monitoring of amphibian/reptile, butterfly, and bird communities and studying the effects of the gravel road that runs through our reserve. Community projects include English teaching, curriculum development for future conservation education programs, and local capacity building when possible. Experience with ArcGIS and conversational spanish is preferable but not limiting. Minimum one year commitment, competitive pay.
