Job Description:
Idaho Bird Observatory is seeking experienced birders/point-count surveyors to conduct standardized bird point counts in northern, central, and eastern Idaho (some amazing areas and awesome birds & other wildlife!) from mid-May through July 2012; might need one crew leader to start in late April. Surveys will cover most habitats within this region, including a variety of conifer and mixed-forest types. Applicants must be able to identify western birds by sight and sound, be physically fit and prepared to hike daily across rough terrain, be enthusiastic about birds and science, be willing to spend long hours in the field, and be willing/able to accurately record and enter data. After training, technicians will mostly work independently across the study area and will often be in remote areas. Technicians will mostly follow a schedule of 10 days on, 4 days off. A valid driver's license, proof of auto insurance, binoculars, camping gear, vehicle (ideally high clearance but negotiable), and a strong work ethic are required. Desired qualifications include excellent bird identification skills (sight & sound), experience conducting standardized bird surveys - especially point counts, experience with camping, long distance hiking and backcountry navigation. Compensation: Monthly salary range of $1,800-$2,500/month depending on experience, reimbursement for project related driving, and up to $400/month in camping and lodging reimbursement.
