Job Description:
Seeking three highly motivated research technicians to assist in a study monitoring the wildlife benefits of private-lands programs, including the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) in the Illinois River and Kaskakia Watersheds in Illinois. Study sites will focus on grasslands, wetland, and/or forested areas. Primary responsibilities include daily morning surveys (avian point counts), vegetation sampling at survey locations, and other related duties. Focal species will include but are not limited to: Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrow, Henslow’s Sparrow, Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Northern Flicker, Loggerhead Shrike, Cerulean Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Field Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, and Northern Bobwhite. Research assistants will work independently and in small teams. Field vehicles and housing will be provided.

Qualifications:
Applicants MUST have demonstrable experience and proficiency in identification of eastern birds. Applicants should also have experience conducting point counts, preference will be given to those who apply with Midwest experience. Meticulous data collection and data entry skills are expected. All applicants must be able to work independently and as part of a team. The candidate must be physically able to hike to remote sites, travel overnight and work outside under adverse field conditions including, but not limited to, biting insects, heat, humidity, and uneven terrain. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license. Ability to work with computer applications including Microsoft Office is required.
