Job Description:
We are seeking several independent contractors to assist with point count surveys in Harney County, Oregon. Contractors will work independently during the day and camp as a small team at night. Work will include bird point count surveys, vegetation measurements, and data entry. We will provide GPS units, computers, and laser rangefinders, but contractors must supply their own high quality binoculars and camping equipment. We are especially interested in finding someone with their own reliable field vehicle (4WD truck) for which we reimburse mileage at the IRS rate (55.5 cents per mile), but encourage all qualified persons to apply. Contractors will be paid $3200-$3800 per month (based on work completed). Surveys will be conducted in a variety of sagebrush habitats in a very scenic part of the country.

Qualifications:
Applicants should have previous experience conducting point count bird surveys, have a clean driving record, and be in excellent physical condition. In addition, we are seeking contractors with outstanding bird identification skills, good orienteering skills, and familiarity with GPS. Previous experience working in sagebrush habitats and estimating distances to individual birds is also desirable. Must be able to hike moderate distances over uneven terrain and be willing to camp in cold and sometimes wet conditions.
