Job Description:
The Tuckernuck Land Trust is seeking a seasonal Coastal Steward to work on Tuckernuck Island, west of Nantucket Island off the south coast of Cape Cod. Primary responsibilities include locating and monitoring breeding Piping Plovers and American Oystercatchers; recording detailed observations to report abundance and productivity data; reading color bands; erecting and maintaining symbolic fencing and signage; establishing relationships with private landowners; and educating beachgoers about shorebird conservation and barrier beach ecology. The Coastal Steward assists with the design and delivery of weekly natural history programs, and provides field assistance to visiting researchers in a variety of projects (e.g. banding, mist-netting, garter snake census, horseshoe crab surveys, other). The Coastal Steward is responsible for daily oversight of the physical operation of TLT’s Field Station, assists with oversight of TLT’s properties, works closely with and is supervised by TLT’s Administrative Manager, and produces an end-of-season report. The 40-hour work week includes weekends and holidays. $12.50 / hour and housing is provided. Must be willing to live with basic conveniences supported by solar power and a generator in a very small island community, and in a relatively remote location with minimal access to retail and commercial business. Must be willing to live alone for extended periods, with periodic influx of visiting researchers, in very small quarters. A background in biology, ecology, or natural resource management, and shorebird field experience preferred. Good observational skills, effective oral and written communication skills, ability to communicate and interact with private landowners, beachgoers and government officials in a professional manner, ability to work independently, and willingness to work long hours in hot sun and participate in strenuous activity.
