Job Description:
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is seeking an experienced science writer/editor with strong knowledge of birds. Collaborate with scientists, educators, writers, and designers at the Lab in all stages of production: concept, writing, design, editing, proofing, and project management. Manage and update the Lab’s award-winning home page www.birds.cornell.edu, visited by 1.5 million unique visitors per year, and contribute to www.allaboutbirds.org with 5.5 million unique visitors per year. In coordination with the editorial team, write web features about the Lab’s work and adapt for print publications. Produce the Lab’s 24-page annual report. Collaborate with partners to edit the State of the Birds report and website (URL: http://www.stateofthebirds.org) and other collaborative reports for bird conservation management. Collaborate with staff in all phases of production for curricula and other educational materials, exhibits, citizen-science materials, newsletters, press releasesabout scientific findings, brochures, and websites. In collaboration with the Lab’s Membership and Development team, write and edit fundraising appeals and campaign materials. Ensure final products are grammatically correct, scientifically accurate, and inspiring and engaging for the intended audiences. In collaboration with the communications team in spreading news and outreach materials through the Lab’s communications channels, mass media, and social networks.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: **Bachelor’s degree in science and professional experience in science writing and editing, or a Bachelor’s degree in English/Communications with strong course work/experience in ornithology. **Knowledge of birds, bird biology, and the birding community required. **Familiarity with major software suites including word processing, image processing, page design, and web publishing. **At least two years of experience in as a science writer or editor for nonacademic publications. **Proven ability to work in a team environment where cooperation between colleagues and flexibility with different styles and approaches is required. **Ability to work independently. **Possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and oral). **Must have the ability to multi-task, prioritize, manage complex projects, and meet deadlines. Preferred Qualifications: **Graduate degree in science journalism or ornithology. **Experience in writing nonprofit fundraising materials. Background check may be required.
