Job Description:
Banding assistant (1) needed to band shorebirds as part of a graduate research project examining shorebird migration ecology in the Lake Erie Marsh Region (LEMR). Research is examining changes in shorebird body mass in relation to food abundances to inform and impact habitat conservation strategies in the region.
Position will require working early mornings in occasionally buggy conditions, some long days, and potentially some weekend work. Assistant needs to be dependable, hard-working, confident in abilities, and able to work alone or in small teams.
Opportunity exists for Assistant to gain experience in marsh management and invasive plant species control with WPMC (during brief period between spring and fall shorebird migrations). Research is being conducted by student in the Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory at The Ohio State University.
Start Date: 1 April 2012.
End Date: 1 November 2012.
Start and End dates are negotiable.
Potential for re-hiring in 2013.
Stipend: $1,600 per month + free dormintory-style housing.
Responsibilities:
**Manage banding sites: set up and use mist nets to capture shorebirds, identify, measure, record, color-mark and band birds **Soil core sampling of invertebrate food base **Roadside surveys for color-marked birds and census counts **Habitat analysis and quantification **Data entry/organization.

Qualifications:
**Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife or related field **Experience with bird handling, preferably shorebirds **Experience banding birds (preferably shorebirds) **Ability to identify inland migrating shorebirds **Experience with mist net banding operations **Ability to conduct roadside censuses **Valid Driver’s License (required).
