Job Description:
3 general types of Technical Assistants--Piping Plover, water quality monitoring, fisheris. TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – PIPING PLOVERS. Competition Number: 2012-PIPL-01-06. Location: Elbow, SK (4 positions); Beechy, SK (2 positions). Date: May 1, 2012 – July 31, 2012. Closing Date: February 17, 2012. The successful candidates will locate and monitor Piping Plover nests along the South Saskatchewan River between Saskatchewan Landing and Gardiner Dam. Duties may include: habitat measurements and ground-truthing; collection of spatial data; collection of nesting data; behavioural observations; nest monitoring; predator monitoring; operation and maintenance of data collection equipment; landowner contacts; and data recording, input and analysis. Accommodations will be provided at either Elbow or Beechy. TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – WATER QUALITY SERVICES. Location: Saskatoon, SK (2 positions) Competition Number: 2012-WQS-01-02. Location: Regina, SK (1 position) Competition Number: 2012-WQS-03. Date: May 1, 2012 – August 31, 2012. Closing Date: February 24, 2012. The successful candidates will undertake activities in support of water quality monitoring programs including our lake and stream monitoring programs and the Rural Water Quality Advisory Program. Typical duties and responsibilities will include: collecting field data and water samples in accordance with accepted scientific practices; compiling and verifying water quality data collected manually or electronically in accordance with established procedures, ensuring accuracy and security of the information collected; and identifying and reporting data discrepancies and issues to the appropriate personnel. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in biology or environmental engineering. TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – FISHERIES Competition Number: 2012-Fisheries-01-08. Location: Hagen, SK (6 positions); Fishing Lake (2 positions). Date: May 1, 2012 – August 31, 2012. Closing Date: February 24, 2012. The successful candidates will aid in assessing fisheries habitat and assist in capture, tagging and tracking of Lake Sturgeon in the Saskatchewan River system. Duties for all positions may include: habitat measurements and ground-truthing; collection of spatial data; collection of fisheries data; operation and maintenance of data collection equipment; landowner contacts; and data recording, input and analysis. Due to the nature of the work, a significant amount of travel will be required within the Saskatchewan River area. Accommodations will be provided at either Hagen or Fishing Lake.

Qualifications:
Qualifications and Requirements: The ideal candidates will be college or university students or recent graduates in wildlife biology or ecology, environmental biology, general biology, natural resources management, or related field. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to work irregular hours. Travel, sustenance and accommodations will be provided if required to work outside of headquarters. Applicants should be able to work outdoors in a variety of climates and conditions and be enthusiastic team players who can relate well with private landowners. Preference will be given to applicants who have previous experience with applicable biological sampling techniques involving the operation of ATVs, electrofishing equipment, and small outboard motor boats. Employees in these positions will routinely work on and around lakes, streams, and other bodies of water. Hourly Rate: $16.84.
