The primary tasks will be to drive 4WD vehicle or walk in thick bush/tree stands for radio-tracking tagged falcons and prey bird identification.
Goals are to determine habitat requirement of NZ falcon during non-breeding season and their survival from pesticide operations.
An average working hour per day is approximately 8 hours: the length is varied by falcon’s behavior. Tracking will be conducted primarily by a 4WD vehicle and sometimes requires walking in uneven ground with sharp edged branches of pines to thick bush in order to receive signals from transmitters.
Working conditions: One/two days off a week – depending on work load. The weather in the forest is extreme. Working in all weather condition except stormy or hailing.
Accommodation will be provided for the duration of the project. Accommodation is equipped with the basic requirements such as tables, bed, kitchen utensils, and cooking appliances. Volunteers require providing their own personal kit including sleeping bag/bedding, toiletries, durable tramping boots, and warm and wet clothing gears.
This place is in a rural area thus a personal car is required if wish to leave the area during days off. Transport will be provided from the accommodation site to the field daily.
There is a 4WD vehicle for field work so volunteers will not need to use their personal vehicle for field work.
