Travel to/from Veracruz

Most people will arrive at the Heriberto Jara Corona Airport in Veracruz (airport code is VER). This airport is served by several national and regional airlines including Mexicana and Volaris (Airbus 318, 320: 120 seats economy class, 12 first class), Aeromexico (MD 80 Series: 46 seats economy class, 12 first class), Aerocaribe, Aerolitoral (Saab 340B: 33 seats), Aerocalifornia (DC-9: 100 seats and 737: 120 seats; no first class) and others. The city is internationally served by Continental (direct flight), and American Airlines (through Mexico City). Airport transfers to the conference hotels are relatively inexpensive: an authorized taxi is approximately $14 dollars, and can be shared by several people.

Alternatively, you may wish to fly to Mexico City, and then travel by bus from Mexico City to Veracruz (normally about 5-7 hours depending on the route). If traveling by bus, make sure that you get to the bus station safely.  Mexico City, like many other large cities, can be dangerous. The safest option is to take an authorized taxi from the terminal (~$10 USD) or you can take the Metro, if you are traveling light.

The Airport is at the “Terminal Aerea” yellow line; you need to travel to terminal Pantitlán and then take the pink line to terminal “San Lázaro.” That will bring you the Terminal de Autobuses de Oriente (TAPO) where you will find several choices to get to Veracruz (ADO and UNO) for about $25 to $45 dollars depending on the company. Bus itineraries can be found at www.ticketbus.com.mx. You may also rent a car from the Mexico City airport to travel to Veracruz, particularly if you plan to visit other localities before or after the conference. Be sure to check with your local automobile association or travel agent for tips and information on driving in Mexico, including safety considerations, insurance, etc.

If you have time, you may want to visit historical sites in Mexico City, but exercise caution, get the advisory notes from your country's embassy to stay on the safe side.  It is always good to travel in groups. If you want, and have time, you may want to take a bus to Puebla directly from the Airport in Mexico City and then spend some time in this beautiful city to then continue your trip to Veracruz.

Veracruz can also be reached by car from the US-Mexico and Belize-Mexico border towns of McAllen and Chetumal in about 19 hours and from the Guatemala-Mexico border town of Tapachula in about 9 hours.

Passports and Visas

Most visitors from outside of Mexico require a valid passport. Currently, citizens of the United States and Canada do not require a visa to visit Mexico as a tourist or business traveler, though a visitor card fee is usually included in the airfare.

If you are a citizen of Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Estonia, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Hungry, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, Uruguay, or Venezuela, you can visit Mexico without a visa. You will only need your passport and the Migratory Form for Tourist, Visitor, visiting business person or visiting councelor.
