Workshop Summary: Many countries and organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean are in the process of developing or have expressed interest in developing national banding schemes. Coordination of developing and existing banding programs is essential for effective data management, reporting, archiving and security, and most importantly, to gain a fuller understanding of migratory bird conservation issues. This workshop will bring together key migratory bird specialists, government officials, academics, conservation personnel, and technical field personnel. It is an essential step in the progress to strengthen international partnerships and support migratory bird conservation in the Americas.
The Bird Banding in the Americas workshop will be held October 8 – 9, 2006 to address issues surrounding the coordination of an Americas’ approach to bird banding. There are two main purposes of the workshop: 1) to discuss and explore opportunities for international collaboration, coordination, and administration of bird banding programs in the Western Hemisphere and 2) to provide an opportunity for interaction between bird banders working in Latin America and individuals and organizations involved in the development of coordinated bird banding efforts. The second objective will be met via joint sessions between the Bird Banding in the Americas workshop and the Advanced Bird-banding and MoSI (Monitoreo de Sobrevivencia Invernal) workshop being held by the Institute for Bird Populations from October 8 -12. Through guided discussions, participants will identify opportunities for data sharing, data archiving, and network-building with the goal of strengthening administrative processes of bird banding programs. The workshop will initiate a voluntary communication network to facilitate data management and sharing and identify more challenging issues that will likely require greater consideration. We anticipate developing mechanisms for band and marker coordination and reporting within the Americas and beyond.
