Workshop: Mexican Expansion of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS)

Contacts:   Humberto Berlanga, Connie Downes, Keith Pardieck, and Dave Ziolkowski
Date & Time:   Tuesday, 3 October 2006, 08:30 am - 12:30 pm
Location:   Veracruz, Mexico, World Trade Center Bldg., Olmecca 2

Participants: This workshop is open to anyone who is interested in assisting with, or partaking in discussions about, the expansion of the North American Breeding Bird Survey program into Mexico.

Description: The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the primary source of large-scale, long-term population data for over 400 of North Americas breeding birds species, forming the foundation of non-game, land bird conservation in the U.S. and Canada. A framework for the collection of such long-term population trend data, the key to large-scale avian conservation planning, does not currently exist in Mexico, severely limiting Mexicos bird conservation efforts. A three-year BBS pilot project (1993 1995) indicated that it was technically feasible to expand the existing BBS program into northern Mexico. At the time, however, the available institutional and ornithological support was not sufficient to maintain a long-term commitment.

The avian conservation community in Mexico has grown substantially in the past decade as has their corresponding need for better trend assessment of breeding bird populations. Dunn et al. (2005) estimate that an extended Mexico BBS program could provide adequate population trend estimates for over 80 species of northern Mexican birds. Thus we are hosting this workshop to initiate advanced discussions and to begin laying the foundation for the implementation of a Mexican BBS program by 2010.
