Description: The Burrowing Owl is listed as a species of concern in most of western North America.  Previously two international symposia have focused on the status and management of this species. The proceedings were published by Raptor Research Foundation. Last year the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) published the North American Conservation Action Plan for Burrowing Owls after a series of tri-national workshops.

The Third International Burrowing Owl Symposium will focus on causes of the decline and current research in Mexico. The symposium will include 19 talks about a variety of related topics including survey methods, infectious agents, population dynamics, effects of land use including grazing and urbanization, dispersal, migration, conservation strategies, petroleum impacts, winter diet, and ecology in Mexico. The final hour of the symposium will be devoted to discussions of the need for collaborative research and conservation efforts in Mexico, USA and Canada.
