Authors: Wayne J. Arendt, Jerry Bauer, and Sandy Coria, USDA Forest Service, International Institute of Tropical Forestry

Workshop Summary: Small communities and non-profit organizations involved with protected area management often have limited ability to contribute to conservation due to lack of funds. One method to help improve social environmental awareness and raise funds for conservation programs is to develop high-quality promotional and educational materials, such as Birdbird-watcher Site site Guidesguides. This These high-quality material publications can be used for educational purposes in schools and at public events, to help raise local community and urban city dwellers knowledge and interest in a specific protected area, and as a means to raise funds for conservation needs.

This three-hour workshop will give examples of materials design and development, emphasizing bird-watcher site guide development. Design and development of other materials, such as calendars, post cards, booklets, and posters, will also be discussed. Lessons learned, methodologies used, and examples from protected areas in Panama, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico will be discussed.

The presenters have designed and produced more than 500,000 units of an assortment of materials for Central America and Caribbean Protected Areas over a three-year period.
